Ian was concerned about the effect of the variety of dilemmas including indexing and url dampening, and was desperate for help. However, he'd read some relatively misleading articles in the past, so he'd a somewhat confusing knowledge of the factors at play. A: Firstly, I believe you might have the dampening link filter a little puzzled. (The only reason your backlinks might not appear in a Google search is if Google hasn't yet indexed the pages containing the links.) Also, don't worry too much about things such as the dampening link filter. In the first place, it is far from established / accepted fact. Many well-regarded Search Engine Optimisation professionals do not have confidence in it in any way. Furthermore, even when it does exist, it only affects those companies with the budget to create the huge numbers (hundreds or thousands probably) of links reputedly required to induce it. If your amount of backlinks suddenly increases by 20, that's no problem.
And secondly, don't think everything Google informs you. By searching for 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', you usually only visit a small percentage of real links to your site. The best way to search for links is to search for just the URL 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk', then to the page that displays next, select 'Find webpages that contain the term 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk' .' If you do it in this way, you'll see all of the pages that have your URL. In most cases, the URL is going to be an active link (or at-least it should be, and you should keep these things make it so). Whenever you try this research, you'll note that your website has about 169 links, not 2-3.
Q: Still another question is all about listed pages (using site:www.betheladventure.co.uk). I am aware this can be a record of pages which were changed. I had 3-2, it went down to 28 and now today it is down to 26. Do they only keep the pages for a month or will there be more to the pages than I realized?
A: The number of indexed pages is simply the number of pages on your own site that Google 'knows about.' Theoretically, the only time age a page comes into play is when the page is also young*, i.e. Google spiders haven't visited it nevertheless, or Google hasn't updated its index.
