I recently received another 'please help' e-mail from a lady named Ian who runs an experience company in Tanzania (http://www.betheladventure.co.uk ). Ian was concerned with the result of a number of dilemmas including indexing and link dampening, and was desperate for help. Unfortunately, he'd read some pretty misleading articles before, so he'd a somewhat mixed up understanding of the factors at play. Ian's e-mail contains a few questions. I have shown each independently below, followed by my answer.
Q: When I search for how many backlinks to my website using 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', I see only 23 results. It seems that only 23 of our backlinks have survived Google's dampening link filter. Can there be a time delay before they are paid to your site? '
A: Firstly, I believe you might have the dampening link filter a bit confused. Based on the dampening link filter theory, your links are observed and acquiesced by Google, you merely don't have the full advantage from them until confirmed period of time has elapsed. The dampening link filter (if it exists) does not stop links from appearing in Google's benefits when you look for them. (The only reason your backlinks might not can be found in a Google search is if Google hasn't yet found the pages containing the links.) Also, do not worry too much about such things as the dampening link filter. To begin with, it is definately not proven / acknowledged fact. Many well regarded Search Engine Optimisation professionals don't rely on it in any way. Furthermore, even if it does exist, it only affects those firms together with the budget to generate the large numbers (hundreds or thousands possibly) of links reputedly required to induce it. If your variety of backlinks suddenly increases by 2-0, that is not a problem.
And secondly, do not feel everything Google informs you. By looking for 'link:www.betheladventure.co.uk', you generally speaking only visit a small percentage of actual links to your site. The easiest way to search for links is to search for just the URL 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk', then on the page that shows next, select 'Find webpages that include the definition of 'www.bethaladventure.co.uk' .' Once you do it in this manner, you'll see most of the pages which contain your URL. Typically, the URL is likely to be an energetic link (or at least it should be, and you should ask them to make it so). Whenever you try this search, you'll note that your site has about 169 links, perhaps not 2-3. Linklicious Blackhatworld Critique includes more about the inner workings of it.
Q: Still another question is all about indexed pages (using site:www.betheladventure.co.uk). I am aware this can be a record of pages which have been changed. I had 32, it went down to 28 and now this morning it is down to 26. Do they just keep the pages for monthly or is there more towards the pages than I realized?
A: The number of indexed pages is just the number of pages in your site that Google 'is aware of.' Theoretically, the only time the age of a page is necessary is when the page is also young*, i.e. Google spiders haven't visited it however, or Google hasn't updated its catalog. As to the reasons the number of indexed pages is reducing, I believe it's merely a temporary change. How many leads to Google's searches differs virtually constantly.
*Actually, formally speaking, it's been suggested that Google is not capable of indexing all 11.5 million pages currently considered to be o-nline (and the 10 million more that are added each day), and that as it indexes new pages, old pages are forced out from the index. (This is a very rough description of the idea - if it is happening at all, it is likely to be a lot more complicated than this.) If this is happening, it might explain why the number of indexed pages is reducing. For another standpoint, people are able to gander at: linklicious price.
